Position Paper #1 Personal Media Usage

Media Usage on Overdrive!

When it comes to my media usage, it is utilized in many different things. My media usage is pretty much  overloaded on all my devices. You can say I'm very glued to social media maybe too much. Media usage that I used is the exact same as everyone else. My personal habits I wouldn't say I'm addicted but would say do need time for other things. If we are thinking terms of a week I say in the media 4 to 5 hours per day and other times consist of sleep. My media usage carries over from every device. I can be on my phone then next I switch to laptop and finally my Smart TV. The device that uses the most would be my phone since it is accessible the fastest and efficient.

My laptop is also used pretty often as my phone.  The platforms my media usage takes place are Twitter, Netflix, YouTube, Tik Tok, and Snapchat. Some more or than others gain my attention. The first one I will talk about that corrupts my day to day life is Tik Tok. Now Tik Tok is a very popular app amongst the youth and I can say everyone is on there. It is just once you get on there you are stuck there for hours at a time. I spend 4 hours surfing the app on my phone. Calculating my screen time for my phone, you can see that Tik Tok is the most used app on it. I know I know it is shameful to spend that much time on one thing! Trust me if you visited the app once, you are drawn in. My Tik Tok page consists of dances and funny videos that I enjoy so my TikTok page is never dull and that is why it is addicting. Now moving on to the  next thing that I spend most of my day on is Twitter. My Twitter is mostly used to pass time if I'm bored and not to be entertained. If you don't know me by now or have seen most of my media projects, I'm obsessed with Kpop. So my Twitter is to keep up with Kpop idols social media and just retweet and like their content. Mostly it is filled with their photos to gear up for their upcoming new single or just daily content.

Twitter leaves notifications as to when my favorite Kpop idol posts so I can see which photo I can save as wallpaper this time. I don't stay long on Twitter for maybe about 30 minutes just surfing and then I'm good. I access Twitter on my phone but can be accessed on my laptop for educational reasons to keep up with Professor Reppert's updates. Having a Twitter comes in handy for those exact reasons. When I use YouTube, more Kpop content is explored more with music videos and workout videos when I have downtime from school.

My Youtube is used mostly on my laptop and I rarely get on YouTube on my phone even if the app is downloaded on it. For me to use YouTube on my phone I must have to see something urgent to watch it but it's more convenient and bigger to watch on my laptop. Snapchat would say take up the least of my usage because there is not much going on there. Unless you are the  type of person that likes the document every photo or video of your life, Snapchat is for you. This app is  just one I pass through occasionally. Snapchat for me when you take a really good photo of yourself to post or if people want to know what you've been up to lately. Now brace yourself because the amount of hours I spend on this app is probably unhealthy. The app I'm talking about is Netflix. I do know  everyone that has an Netflix account can attest to binge-watching shows. My habit of using this app might be more frequent than others by a margin. I could say the habit comes from once you start a show you really like, it is difficult from not watching more. My habit  of overload from binge-watching starts from when I wake up until I fall asleep. It is throughout the whole day. That is because the shows I typically watch have a time limit of 1 and 10 minutes until the next episode is played. It takes me a lot longer to finish shows than most people. Shows like this that have maximum time are Kdramas.

These types of genre only have one season therefore they packed the episodes 1 to 2 hours. I basically eat, sleep, and breathe Netflix. I rarely watch other shows than Kdramas these days. I guess the habit started around when the pandemic started. I think binge-watching can get to my head from time to time because I fell asleep with Netflix still playing in the morning. Now that I have discussed how my media usage takes over my life, I discuss how it affects my performance academically.

Taking into account how my media usage affects how I perform academically would say only half affected. It does get to a point where I neglect the time frame needed to do an assignment and put off until the due date is closer than doing it earlier. As I feel I have more time to do an assignment, I set my focus on other things such as social media. At the end of the day, the work does get done and on time with sometimes pulling all-nighter to finish. If we think in terms of positively speaking of how my media usage affects my academics, I will say if I run into a snag in my assignments going on social media helps the juices flow for me at least. To sum it up, my media usage could affect the time I spend studying  and starting work at a decent time. I feel it can be a bit too much as to where I procrastinate profusely. Overall, my media usage comes with good and bad side effects.
